What's the point of buying an unlocked iPhone 5c or 5S?

It looks like every carrier wants you to use the iPhone they sell you, or that is pre-configured for their network.

Thus -- it seems -- if you go online and buy an iPhone 5S or 5c, and want to use a no-contract carrier, you are out of luck. Or am I missing something.

If one had an unlocked iPhone 5c purchased from Apple, where could or would you go to get a no-contract service arrangement?

They would simply buy a SIM (or whatever they're called these days) card for each country and avoid roaming charges, especially for data. In addition, they would have a local phone number in every country they visited, so people could contact them easily.

Also, T-Mobile offers a prepaid option with the iPhone. I looked into it, but the upfront price for the phone was so high that a contract is more manageable from month to month.
