Related: About this forumSilent Mail Syndrome
Both of my Macs have developed Silent Mail Syndrome. New messages arrive without making a noise. When I send a message, there is no whooshing sound. WTF?

Sent mail sound is called 'swoosh;' new mail alert I believe is 'ding.' (I have mine all reset to custom sounds.)

And another thing: when I click on the envelope icon to check for new messages, there should be a brief tone if there are no new messages. That sound has also disappeared.
Perhaps I should mention that the Silent Mail Syndrome on one of my Macs started when I downloaded the newest version of "Mountain Lion", OS X 10.8.1.
