Windows update questions

I got the popup that there was an update. I finished what I was doing and closed everything running, chose update and restart at 7:56 a.m. 45 minutes later, the screen still says 'Getting Windows ready, don't restart your computer'
Every time I update, this happens. I am usually impatient and use escape or C-A-D to urge it along. I'm trying to be patient this time.
I have a Dell laptop with Windows 10. I have over half the memory free.
My question is if I'm seeing that message, are the updates getting installed, or is the laptop just sitting there taking up space? Is it ok to urge along it by using Esc or C-A-D?

Thank you.

If it hasn’t made any progress, kill it. Despite the warnings, update is generally pretty good at recovering from a restart.

I've had this laptop since 2019 oe 2020, and it has always been slow on updates and takes forever for me to get control back. The updates, cleaning, any maintenence, does nothing to improve performance either, either. I think that the updates are more to add new ways to invade my privacy than to improve my computer performance.

I saw something called copilot come up on my toolbar and I unpinned it. Read it is ms ai. Read that it is installed, whether you want it or not and it is hard to get rid of, if you even can. I've had a version of it on this laptop since July 24, but didn't notice.

I appreciate the company while I went through this ridiculous process.

I would recommend installing these things overnight rather than in the middle of the day.

I've had situations where windows updates can take up to two hours as well, depending on the last time updates were run. Just be patient, it will get there.
