The port connection to my HP laptop has been wonky for a few days, I would have to holdd it
a certain way for it to make contact. Well that is not even happening now. Any thoughts or suggestions? TY in advance.

(24,178 posts)(and most manufacturers won't like you doing this), simply take apart the unit (unplugged) and examine the port on the inside, and see if something needs to be tightened up. If so, tighten it up, and then test it before closing it back up (if easily done) and viola! Good luck.

It will help us to know the model as well.

(11,574 posts)It's worth opening up the laptop to see. There are often connections loose where the power socket is attached to the main board. That could easily be resoldered. Or did the socket itself break?

(2,969 posts)Cable connectors can go bad too. Maybe try a different cable for results. Or spray some contact cleaner into the port itself and flush out any debris that might be impacting the connection.

(18,151 posts)Or similar to the same height as the round power insert plug and a couple of inches long. Wrap tightly around the end of the power adapter and see if that holds it in place.

(3,849 posts)The physical stresses of repeated insertions and deletions can weaken its connections to the board. This is a more complicated situation than having the port physically connected to the frame of the laptop and then connected electrically to the main board by a cable.

(14,157 posts)If you take off the bottom, you'll see the power jack is now on the end of a small cable that plugs into the motherboard. There is a small green label wrapped around that cable with a part number (P/N) printed on it. An example from one I did recently was 83702-2502. Look up that part number on Amazon and you'll find a replacement for about $10 or less. You can find videos showing how to remove/replace on your model on YouTube. It takes only a few minutes.
