Sick of being nagged to turn off your ad blocker?

Firefox/Waterfox extension - Tampermonkey.

I could live with the nags until they started on YouTube. This has fixed them.

Things that have worked easily for me: (keep it simple)

Safari Reader often works, and cleans up tiny text, sidebars and "light gray on light gray background" text. Other reader extensions on other browsers might, as well.

Turn off JavaScript (desktop). Too many steps on mobile unless you know a shortcut.

On the desktop, I keep a settings/preferences window open to the security menu item, for quick access. JavaScript runs these nags, and more. Really nasty sites use it to deliver content, so you can't turn it off.

Sheriff app (iOS). I am trying it. It's free.

Sheriff gives you the tools to block JavaScript and/or Cookies on a per-domain basis.

Use the archive.
Copy the page's url
Go to archive.is or .ph or .md
Paste in the url

Usually an archive has already been made. This may be in fact at the Wayback machine. I don't know at this point.

I'll try others, but most tamper tools (Userscripts) only work on desktop browsers, and other than safari. I have been using safari a lot lately to simplify mobile and desktop context switching. And extension management.

Alternatively, Firefox or opera. Opera for its minimal vpn (for geolocation, not encryption) and mainly, for its compatibility with chrome extensions.

I'll edit if any of this is inaccurate.
Each browser needs to be updated for the latest hack anttacks, often.

First you need to find and download a script or two. There's probably a more efficient way of doing this - I haven't RTFM yet.

1. Go to the homepage: https://www.tampermonkey.net/index.php

2. Second tab "Userscripts"

3. Using the box "Search for userscripts" I entered https://www.youtube.com/ as search term. This gave over a hundred pages of results of scripts that run on YouTube.

4. Click the script you want to go to the script page and there will be a button to download.

5. Via 'Manage Extension' you can turn scripts on and off

I'm still learning how to operate this extension but it seems pretty solid so far.

ON EDIT: I've just installed uBlockOrigin which is a Fire/Waterfox extension and it's blocking the nags. Might be a better alternative.

For practically every extension - you give most of them similar permissions. And yes, I did read them before installing, thank you.

5. I simply don't visit sites that have annoying ads.

Same with television. I can't complain about any advertising I see on television because I never see any. It's been banished from my personal universe.

I'll pay to make advertising go away.

If I don't have the option to make annoying ads go away (as I do on DU by buying a star) I simply don't revisit those sites.

If more people simply avoided web sites and television with annoying advertising there might be a lot less of it.

For casual web surfing I use uBlock Origin. If a site objects to that I simply move on. If a site I regularly visit is supported by advertising I'll turn it off but only if the advertising is well behaved, relevant to the site's subject matter, and doesn't move or make noise. Otherwise that site will be removed from my regular reading.

6. I don't get it with youtube/safari/adblocker. I get the warning to disable the ad blocker. I disable

the adblocker and reload youtube. I don't get any adds. WTF?
I have been doing it all week and no adds after disabling adblocker..
Very strange and if it works, what the hay..
