High Speed Internet
Every day at 1:08PM or thereabouts, my internet connection fails. It will disconnect
every 5-10 minutes for the next 6 hours.
There is usually some disruption like this around late January, mid-May, June, September, and
late December. I wonder if they are performing maintenance relative to college traffic. It could
also be heat, or changes in temperature, it's HOT here now. Once it hadn't rained in a month
and an abrupt cloudburst disconnected it in 10 seconds.
Verizon of course will offer no explanation. Asian tech support is there to soothe you and send
a new modem and book repairs.
I'm trying to find ways to run my online eBay/eTrade functions from a public WiFi such as the library.
These headaches are not worth the cost.

about $250 to start.

(4,587 posts)The bundles come together in vaults that are usually exposed to rain and sun on their tops. They are supposed to be watertight, but it seems some of them leak.
I had the same problem with a different fiber provider and it wasn't solved until they replaced the vault causing the problem. Good luck.

(47,325 posts)it's all copper lines from the 1950s. Lineman told me all the lines are bad, but
he could swap onto another bad one if the problem persists.
What's a vault? I don't even have an outside box. Just direct line
and a terminal with ceramic covered solenoids. I have a tech sheet somewhere
from online that tells me how to wire heavier ware direct from the terminal wire
to the router, but that's not really the problem. The disconnects are upline
somewhere. Oops it just disconnected, time to restart the router.

(4,587 posts)Vaults are basically big junction boxes set into the sidewalk or street. They aren't unique to fiber optic networks, so your rain related disconnects could still be tied to a leaky one. Trying to get them to track it down is probably futile, though.

Cancel service. Then they're ready to do anything for you. There are junction
boxes on phone poles but I think they're related to cable tv. Most say
"Siemens" on the outside.

(43,201 posts)For one thing ... a bad guy could set up his computer between you and the library without your knowledge. And while you are thinking you are connected to the library's wi-fi you are actually being relayed through the bad guy's machine while he is reading and storing your login info wherever you go. There are many ways to compromise someone's connection. This might shed some light.

(47,325 posts)No wonder my library comes with so many disclaimers. I will ask if they have
wired connections for laptop use. Maybe there is a reason I don't see many
people at the library with their laptops anymore.

(22,651 posts)I suggest calling repair every time it happens to document the issue on Verizon's side. Tell them you want a credit for the issue. They'll tell you to call billing, do it and get your $1.00.
When you hit a threshold of about 5 calls and credits they'll have real technicians work on the problem and fix it for you. Ask them to have the tech call you and save his number when he does. They're a wealth of information.
IMO, it has something to do with refreshing the DNS? combined with a weak or worn part of the wire on their side.

(47,325 posts)it's been fine since Friday night. After two weeks of intermittent disconnects
then Thursday-Friday every 10 minutes, now it's fine. I think it's some kind of
maintenance. I live very far from everything, the end of the line. Every disruption
up line impacts my service.
Or it could be it's ok because the temperatures cooled off.
I will call them when it happens again and again. I got so tired of overseas customer
service which are not given the tools to do much of anything, I stopped calling.
Next outages should be end of June-early July if past episodes are any indication.
I can get a credit? Amazing. I'm still thinking about canceling altogether. But it's a
distant goal.
