I am familiar with photo-shop 7 but this is an entirely new monkey and very complex. Can anyone pls advise me on good photo shop book? I dont want a book on how to create fancy and surrealistic pics - just one which explains the usage and meaning of every tool available. thanks so much to anyone who answers

I would recommend the "Teach Yourself Visually" books -- the PS book is "Teach Yourself VISUALLY Photoshop CS5" by Mike Wooldridge. Although I've been working in PS for 20 years, so don't need a beginners book, I've used the TYV books for many other topics and can say they are the best for learning new applications.

Also, if you plan to use PS for digital photography, my favorite book is "The Adobe Photoshop CS5 Book for Digital Photographers" by Scott Kelby. It has lots of step-by-steps and clear explanations for everything you would need to do to digital photographs with PS.
