Very Basic question about getting an email "subscribe" button for Wordpress

I'm maintaining someone's Worpress blog

(I believe it's wordpress.com as opposed to worpress.org, actually I'm not sure, it's the one we download and put on our own server)

I was surprised to find that there is not a simple setting to display a big subscribe button so that visitors will receive emails when a post is made. Or am I missing it?

Is there some plugin that will add a subscribe button? When I search for this, I usually end up with fancy plugins that will connect the blog to Facebook, Twitter, etc., but I already have that. In this case I just need an email sent to the subscriber, which is an option I can't find anywhere...

Maybe this is problematic because of spam issues, so a confirmation email would need to be sent to the user to confirm, but does such a plugin exist?

Install the Jetpack plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/jetpack

It rolls several of the WordPress official plugins into one, including the email subscribe button, and adds a few more to boot (such as After The Deadline spellchecker). I think Automattic, the company that owns WordPress.com, intends Jetpack to become a WordPress app store. Right now though it's all free.

3. Just a couple issues

I got it installed, after a little bit of trouble. There was a conflict with the All-In-One SEO Pack plugin. But I deactivated All-In-One, then Reactivated it, and now the Follow button works in the lower lefthand corner. I wish it was more prominent, but anyway...

The question I have is whether it send confirmation emails. I'm a little concerned about spammers using it to send email via our blog. Or some way to unsubscribe in the email they receive?

I haven't seen the email it sends yet, and can't write a test blog because I'm afraid other notifications will be sent about any test posts.

Thanks

4. It uses the WordPress.com email subscription service

The subscriber gets a confirmation email. After they click the confirm button (or link if they have images turned off), they can set delivery options at Wordpress.com. It's the exact same service as WordPress.com bloggers have access to. It's using WordPress' email so you don't have to worry about your blog being used to send spam.

I assume you added the blog subscription widget to one of your sidebars? If so, you can configure the widget, as well as change the order in which it appears by dragging and dropping.

You may have missed the link to the documentation. http://jetpack.me/2011/11/29/how-to-use-email-subscriptions-in-jetpack-1-2

If you want to change how it looks, they you can create some custom css in your theme's style.css for the jetpack_subscription_widget parent class. You may have to use the !important declaration since I think that widget has some inline CSS you'll want to override.

If you need help with CSS just google. There are a lot of tutorials out there.

Hope that helps.
