Related: About this forumIs HTML an STD? Seems like some Americans think so
A recent study found that many Americans are lost when it comes to tech-related terms, with 11% saying that they thought HTML a language that is used to create websites was a sexually transmitted disease.
The study was conducted by Vouchercloud.net, a coupons website, as a way to determine how knowledgeable users are when it comes to tech terms.
Technology is a huge interest for our user base, and month after month we see thousands of people visiting our site to look for coupons and deals to use when purchasing their favorite tech products, a company spokeswoman said in a statement. It seems that quite a few of us need to brush up on our tech definitions.
Besides HTML, there were some other amusing findings:
42% said they believed a motherboard was the deck of a cruise ship. A motherboard is usually a circuit board that holds many of the key components of a computer.

(4,667 posts)I am not kidding.
I had the good luck to be sat down and shown how to write HTML early on in the process and it changed my life. Hyperlinks are magic. It would be great to see what little kids (and more adults) did with that knowledge.
Social networking sites and prespun blogging platforms have their uses but overuse of them is dumbing down the net..
Wouldnt that be great? its so easy that there is no reason not to teach everybody HTML.
What are they afraid of, that they might have something important to say?
I think we need to get that message out there.

Florida Senate endorses making computer coding a foreign language

I had some training in HTML and Web development in the late 90s so I know the value of HTML coding. I was a statistical analyst in the insurance industry and the knowledge of HTML came into play when I was transferring data from a Web platform back to a relational database for analysis. None of my colleagues had a clue how to do it so it was a major improvement in the productivity of the department when I impressed them with that knowledge.
By the way, welcome to DU.
