Ministers will face a fierce battle in parliament over plans to force some asylum seekers to be relocated to Rwanda, a Labour peer and former child refugee has vowed.

Alf Dubs, who was brought to Britain from Czechoslovakia on one of the Kindertransport trains in 1939, told the Guardian that the government was trying to “ride roughshod” over international agreements designed to help those seeking sanctuary.

“I think it’s a way of getting rid of people the government doesn’t want, dumping them in a distant African country, and they’ll have no chance of getting out of there again,” he said.

“I think it’s a breach of the 1951 Geneva conventions on refugees. You can’t just shunt them around like unwanted people.”

Asked if the resettlement scheme was ever likely to get off the ground, given the threat of judicial reviews and other court action, Dubs said: “I think it’s unlikely. As soon as they try and remove one person, I’m sure there’ll be a legal challenge, and I’m not sure the government will win it.”

Part of me wants to believe that this is all performative - racist red rag to the red wall Brexit crowd, but I don't think it is. The Conservative Party is truly this far right now. UKIP has taken over and they are really this horrid.

1. Priti Patel 'overruled' concerns of top Home Office civil servant over Rwanda asylum plan

The Home Secretary has issued a rare "ministerial direction" to overrule concerns of a top civil servant regarding plans to ship some asylum seekers to Rwanda, it is reported.

It is understood Home Office civil servants raised concerns that the plan would not deliver value for money.

Multiple reports have surfaced that Priti Patel shot down those concerns and issued a ministerial direction to overrule them.

The UN refugee agency blasted the move as "unacceptable" and claimed the plans breached international and refugee law.

Assistant secretary-general Gillian Triggs also questioned whether it would act as a long-term deterrent, given Israel’s attempt to do something similar in Rwanda with Eritrean and Sudanese incomers saw the refugees “leave the country and start the process all over again”.

2. My question is, why Rwanda? Why not the Isle of Mann? or the Channel Islands?

Could it be that would upset too many white male Christian land owners?

3. It would upset them; but also, the UK government is responsible for foreign policy for them

and the purpose of this is to remove the unwanted foreigners from British jurisdiction and make them Somebody Else's Problem. And also, it is explicitly being sold by the government as a deterrent - "you'll never be allowed to settle in this developed country, you'll be sent to a developing country with a dodgy human rights record, a GDP per capita of about $900, and the highest population density in Africa". The Rwandan president may also be one of the few people who'd agree to this.
