British Army corporal tweets Angela Rayner will “perish” in Brexit “civil war”

A corporal in the British Army issued a death threat to a Labour MP and appeared to incite “civil war” on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.

The corporal, whose Twitter account has now been deleted, wrote to Rayner: “Ohh fuck off you stupid bitch” and said the MP would “perish when civil war comes and it’s coming”. The soldier ended the tweet by adding that “17.4 million people are gunning for blood if we don’t leave”.

I am more than certain about 10 people - most of them on the front bench - out of the 17.4 million would advocate a civil war but is this who we are now? This is an outrage. He should be in the glass house. He certainly should be nowhere near any weapons of any sort.

I mean that I could have thrown a stone from my living room window and had it land in their barracks!

Some of the nicest people I've ever met have been in the armed forces. Some of the biggest arseholes I've ever met have also been in the armed forces. And a disproportionate number of vocal far right supporters I have come across have been former members of the armed forces.

A disproportionately large number of homeless people are also former members of the armed forces, which is deeply concerning.

The army and police are investigating after a soldier sent a death threat to the shadow education secretary, Angela Rayner, defence officials have said.

The commander of the British field army, Lt Gen Ivan Jones, and the defence secretary, Ben Wallace, denounced the message, which was posted on Twitter on Wednesday, as MPs pleaded with the prime minister to tone down his Brexit rhetoric, saying they feared it would incite violence against them.

Posting an image of the message online on Thursday, Rayner said it was just an example of the “usual vile tweet I get daily”. It read that she will “perish when civil war comes”, suggesting that people who voted for Brexit would be “gunning for blood if we don’t leave”.

Jones apologised and confirmed his belief that the tweet was posted by a serving soldier.
