'Culture of fear' claims as Javid confronts PM over adviser's sacking

Dominic Cummings ‘pissed off’ about briefings on pay and gender balance – report

A furious Sajid Javid confronted Boris Johnson on Friday and demanded an explanation of why his media adviser was sacked without his knowledge, amid claims that a deep “culture of fear” has taken hold within the government.

Sonia Khan, Javid’s media adviser, was escorted from No 10 by an armed police officer after a meeting with Johnson’s top strategist, Dominic Cummings, in which she was accused of being dishonest about her contact with the former chancellor Philip Hammond and one of his ex-advisers, who have been trying to block a no-deal Brexit.

Khan is the second adviser working for the chancellor to be sacked by No 10. She is also the fourth young woman in a month to be axed from the prime minister’s network of advisers and senior staffers.

On Friday evening a furious Cummings was reported to have told special advisers that he was “pissed off” about “bullshit briefings” on pay and gender balance.

In comments confirmed by two sources to the Guardian, he told the group that anyone who didn’t like his management style could “fuck off”.

UK finance minister 'livid' at PM Johnson over firing of aide: media

LONDON (Reuters) - British finance minister Sajid Javid has challenged Prime Minister Boris Johnson over the dismissal of an aide by Johnson’s top advisor which has caused tension between the government’s two most powerful men, media said.

The Financial Times said on Friday that Javid was “livid” about the firing on Thursday of his press aide by Dominic Cummings, who was looking into whether government officials had helped opponents of Johnson’s Brexit plans.

“He’s absolutely furious,” the newspaper quoted a colleague of Javid’s as saying. “He doesn’t consider the matter closed.”

Javid had not threatened to resign but his relationship with Johnson had been compromised, the FT said.

Other newspapers also reported tensions between Javid and Johnson over the dismissal and other incidents which came as Britain’s government is preparing for Brexit on Oct. 31 and is trying to move ahead with a new domestic agenda too.
