Claims News Corp pirates attacked Foxtel

The first accusations of dirty tricks by Rupert Murdoch's company News Corp in Australia have been published today in the Australian Financial Review.

In a seven-page expose News Corp is accused of using a subsidiary, NDS, to pirate smart cards used to encrypt digital TV, in a bid to gain dominance of the technology in the mid-90s.

The Fairfax paper claims they even used the technology to attack systems used by Foxtel, which is quarter owned by News Corp subsidiary News Ltd, with Australian operators losing up to $50m each year.

This info is the talk of media interest groups today - who knows where it might lead, but we might hope it bites Rupert on the bum.

(Apologies for the long link - this comes from an industry journal and I have no idea how to cut it down)
