A Victorian Labor MP’s dramatic speech about COVID-19 appears to have lifted entire chunks from a popular US television drama.

Victorian Labor MP Will Fowles' dramatic speech about COVID-19 appears to have lifted entire chunks from a popular US television drama.

Victorian politics had quite a day yesterday, so you would be excused if you missed a peculiar moment that deserves some attention.

Amid the failed no-confidence motion in Premier Daniel Andrews, his colleague, Labor MP Will Fowles, delivered a speech that might have sounded familiar.

That’s because parts of it, either deliberately or unconsciously, were lifted from ’90s US TV drama The West Wing, and, specifically, fictional US President Jed Bartlet, played by Martin Sheen.

During the 90-second speech in which he praised healthcare workers, Mr Fowles told Parliament: “We did not expect, not did we invite, this confrontation with a ferocious and feckless enemy.”
