State employee salary cuts possible as part of budget changes

CHEYENNE – An across-the-board two percent pay cut for state employee salaries paid by the general fund is among the dozens of supplemental budget amendments considered this week in the Wyoming Legislature.

The two percent cut, found in Amendment 22 to the Senate’s supplemental budget bill, would only affect salaries for agencies that are funded by the general fund and also excludes the University of Wyoming, community colleges, school districts and the judicial branch.

That means if an agency doesn’t receive general fund money, or won’t due to other budget amendments, it is not affected.

The cut would affect the budget for salaries, leaving it up to agencies to decide how to absorb that amount. It doesn’t necessarily mean salaries for existing employees would be slashed.
