Lawmakers proceed with cutting budget

CHEYENNE – Lawmakers approved cuts to state government Friday — from tribal liaisons to the Wyoming State Fair to some social programs — as they continue slogging through the process of adopting a state budget.

The cuts come as the Wyoming Legislature is looking to close a $156 million shortfall in revenues to general government operations, due to the energy downturn.

On Friday, the Senate finished amending the budget and was waiting for the House to finish its amendments.

The House will continue amending the budget legislation on Monday, an unusual move as the second round of tweaking the spending bill typically occurs in one day, said Marguerite Herman, a lobbyist and former journalist who has observed the Legislature for 36 years.
