Bus involved in crash was carrying UW marching band to Poinsettia Bowl
No one was injured when a charter bus carrying dozens of University of Wyoming students was involved in a crash Saturday near Rawlins, but the makings for a tragedy were there, according to the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
The bus was one of four carrying members of the UW Western Thunder Marching Band and others from the university as they traveled westbound on Interstate 80 en route to the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego, where the Cowboys football team is scheduled to take on Brigham Young University on Wednesday.
Just after noon, the buses were traveling together just west of Rawlins where icy conditions led the buses to drive at reduced speeds. A 2001 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Evanston resident Elias Tesoro, 18, attempted to pass the chain of buses. The pickup truck began to fishtail during the maneuver and crashed into one of the buses. This sent the bus into the north ditch, but the driver, Aurora, Colorado, resident Brenda Taylor, 61, regained control of the bus and was able to steer it back onto the shoulder of the highway and came to a controlled stop.
WHP Sgt. David Wagener said the investigating trooper, Jason Jurca, credited Taylor’s actions as the reason all of the bus’ 35 passengers walked away from the incident unscathed.
