Dozens of refinery workers face layoffs in Sinclair

SINCLAIR – More than 30 workers at the local HF Sinclair oil refinery are out of work. And 55 more have been put on notice in what the company calls a realignment “to reflect best practices for operational excellence.”

The oil company has confirmed that 32 employees at the refinery in Sinclair were laid off this week and 55 others given their pink slips as of September. Some Wyoming politicians expressed hope that those losing employment can find new jobs.

The move comes after last year’s acquisition of Sinclair Oil by HollyFrontier and the creation of HF Sinclair.

“As a result of the recent acquisition, we are aligning our facilities,” the company said in a statement to the Rawlins Times, a sister paper of the Wyoming Tribune Eagle. “Through this work, we have made changes to organizational structures across the newly acquired facilities that will allow us to operate more efficiently, while maintaining safety and reliability.”

1. BS! They are cutting employees to save money due to acquisition costs and to Hell with safety!

BP did the same thing in 2005, and their plant blew up. They blamed the operator who had worked 45 days straight on 12 hour shifts and was watching multiple units with thousands of alarms. They used to have two operators watching one unit. Then it was two and then three units, then it was just one person. Seen this movie before!

2. Unfortunately, the regulatory environment in Wyoming is so lax that nobody will care.

The only bright spot is that my sister in Rawlins is upwind from the refinery in Sinclair when the place goes boom.
