Van Wanggaard (R-Racine) retiring at end of this term

MILWAUKEE —
State Sen. Van Wanggaard, R-Racine, announced he will not seek reelection and will retire at the end of his current term.

Wanggaard, the only Republican ever elected to four terms in the 21st District, cited health concerns, both personal and family-related, as key factors in his decision.

My head is telling me it's time to retire. I'll be 78 years old at the end of the next term," Wanggaard said in a statement. "My health, and the health of my family will not allow me to put my all into this campaign, or serving the 21st District."

The senator acknowledged the difficulty of his decision, saying, "In my heart, I desperately want to run again. I would love to continue to serve as a common-sense conservative voice in the Legislature. Public service is in my blood."

IIRC this was a Harris +1 district and could be ripe for a Dem pickup.
