Dancing, drag and democracy: How Milwaukee's oldest LGBTQ bar encourages young people to vote
People ages 18 to 24 are least likely to vote, research shows, and the United States has one of the lowest youth voter turnouts in the world.
But when Milwaukee's oldest gay bar, This Is It!, hosted an event about voting on a Wednesday night, hundreds of young people packed the dance floor, many decked out in neon green attire.
The event, "Voting is SO Brat: Unlock the Night for Planned Parenthood," was inspired by Charli XCX's hit album "BRAT." The album resonated with young people so much that Brat became its own aesthetic.
Combining young people's love for the album with efforts to get out the vote can be seen across the country, starting when pop star Charli XCX posted on X, "kamala IS brat."
