Early voting starts soon. Here are locations, dates and times for Milwaukee and the suburbs

In-person absentee voting, also known as early voting, starts on Tuesday, Oct. 22, in Milwaukee and across Wisconsin for the Nov. 5 election.

For those who can't make it to the polls on Election Day ― or who just want to get it done beforehand ― early voting offers the chance to cast ballots ahead of time. Under Wisconsin law, voters do not need to provide a reason, such as being out of town on Election Day, to vote absentee.

The early voting period typically starts two weeks prior to any election day, meaning most locations will begin accepting ballots in-person on Tuesday, Oct. 22, and will typically last until Sunday, Nov. 3. Early voting ballots are not typically accepted on the Monday before the election, which this year is Nov. 4.

For the communities that offer early voting, locations, dates and times vary. Some municipalities do not offer it. Visit your local clerk's website for the most up-to-date information.

Here's what to know about early voting in Milwaukee, its surrounding suburbs and other parts of southeast Wisconsin, as well as what to bring with you.
