Janesville school board approves two referendums addressing district funding for Nov. ballot

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - The School District of Janesville (SDJ) unanimously approved the addition of two referendum questions on November’s ballot, both addressing decreased state funding in recent years.

The first question will ask voters to renew a $14.5 million referendum that the community approved in 2020, extending the funds to last through June 2027 rather than 2025. The money would be used to maintain small class sizes, invest in classroom technology and curriculum resources and to attract and retain staff. Taxpayers are not expected to see any increase if this question is approved.

The second question is a capital referendum, asking for approval of funds no more than $151.8 million to address the district’s facility needs. These funds would help SDJ move forward for long-term plans to repair and replace high-priority maintenance needs, enhance security and safety and improve special education spaces.

If approved, property taxes are expected to increase $81 for every $100,000 of property value.

And before. In ‘93, the state froze revenue limits per pupil. Districts have literally had the money they can raise per pupil frozen for over 30 years. Our state legislature is all pro-school vouchers and the private and charter schools get what they need, while funding for our public schools does not keep pace with inflation.

In ‘22 and ‘23, with record inflation, we got NO INCREASE per pupil for state funding. We were directed to use our federal ESSER funds to balance our budgets. That money was supposed to be for mitigating learning loss during COVID.

We must vote out republicans in our state.
