The Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) met Thursday night to discuss a recent announcement from the Racine County Sheriffs Office that a number of activists had fraudulently requested absentee ballots as a way to prove the states online election system is vulnerable to fraud.
The commission decided to wait until next week to consider referring criminal charges against the activists, but did vote 6-0 to send a communication to local municipal clerks to be aware of the issue and remind them of their obligation to refer cases to their local district attorneys if they believe a crime has occurred. The body also voted 6-0 to send postcards to the approximately 4,000 voters they believe might be vulnerable to the strategy people who requested absentee ballots be sent to an address different from the one theyre registered under.
On Wednesday, Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling a supporter of former President Donald Trump wrote in a Facebook post that his office, which has spent nearly two years investigating apparent voter fraud in the 2020 election, had discovered alleged vulnerabilities in the states MyVote online system. The apparent flaw was discovered when several right-wing activists focused on sussing out election fraud requested absentee ballots on behalf of other people including Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Racine Mayor Cory Mason.
Rather than charge those activists with the crime theyve admitted to committing, Schmaling wrote in the post that he was calling for the suspension of the MyVote systems absentee ballot request function, which essentially sends an email to a persons local clerk requesting that an absentee ballot be sent.

(4,598 posts)Stealing somebody elses ballot and trying to cast a vote should be a felony. Is it?

(5,725 posts)about absentee ballots etc. Even if you are successful in getting someone elses ballot you would have to know what their signature looked like and be able to forge it. This is a bunch of wack-jobs trying to grandstand a red herring and make it an issue. Are people able to commit fraud/felonies in this country on many different things? Of course they are and that's why there is punishment. Showing people the first steps to making the felony a reality is not evidence of some widespread commission of that felony. It's like when these clowns scream about voter registration drives handing in registrations that are for Mickey Mouse etc. They scream that the canvassers "handed in fraudulent forms to try and get fictitious registrations into the system" when in fact the canvassers are simply complying with the law that requires them to turn in all forms to the officials in charge of voter registration because it is not up to the canvasser to throw out forms. That requirement keeps partisans from throwing out forms of those they feel would not "vote their way". But the media eats it all up and never bothers to call this stuff for what it is.
