Wisconsin school district opts out of free lunch program for students

A Wisconsin district's school board has opted out of a federal program providing all students free lunch, making it the only district in the state to do so, according to WISN.

The school board in Waukesha had opted into the program when it began in 2020 as a response to the coronavirus pandemic but decided not to renew its status going into the school year.

"As we get back to whatever you want to believe is normal, we have decisions to make," Joseph Como, the school board's president, said in a June meeting. "I would say this is part of normalization."

Another board member said
the program enabled families to "become spoiled,"
according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Young students in grades lower than high school who come to school without a packed lunch, money or an accepted lunch program application,
may be given cheese sandwiches ...

Teachers, please make sure these kids have something to eat!

these motherf***ers have no soul. Anywho, the monies supplied by the Federal Government can be sent to a school district that cares about the children.

a kid they can't have their lunch. When we moved my kids still had a good amount of money in their lunch accounts, and I had the school use it to pay off other student's lunch accounts.

The article fails to mention the school board would revert back to the old program where the disadvantaged would get meals.

Hungry kids in Waukesha weren't going to go hungry.

Disappointed in the media coverage.

1 in 7 kids in the US is food insecure. Often kids will skip free school lunch because of stigma that comes from other kids criticizing them.

Sounds like the repugs in Waukesha backpedalled. Remember not a single republican voted for the American Rescue Plan that will help reduce child poverty. Repugs rally for the fetus but don't give a shit once they are born.
