Social media posts from Wisconsin Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany are included in a report of more than 120 congressional Republicans who joined former President Donald Trumps effort to overturn the 2020 election.
The report, released by Democratic Rep. Zoe Lofgren, lists the public statements between Election Day and Jan. 31 of every Republican who voted to overturn the election results. The report doesnt say what Lofgren believes should happen to these members, though does bring up the process for expulsion from Congress for potential violations of the 14th Amendment.
The 14th Amendment ensures that every person born in the United States is granted citizenship. It also allows for any elected official to be expelled for engaging in insurrection or rebellion against the country.
Like former President Trump, any elected Member of Congress who aided and abetted the insurrection or incited the attack seriously threatened our democratic government, Lofgren writes in her foreword. They would have betrayed their oath of office and would be implicated in the same constitutional provision cited in the Article of Impeachment. That provision prohibits any person who has previously taken an oath as a member of Congress to support the Constitution but subsequently engaged in insurrection or rebellion from serving in Congress.

(2,274 posts)If we could only hold them accountable. THAT would maybe be a wake up call, but I'm afraid these unamerican asshats are going to face no consequences other than MAYBE losing the next election.

(3,616 posts)Life moves ahead, we cannot write the scripts of things to happen by what has happened in the past, yes history repeats, but it also sets new precedence. I see a more determined and less passive Democratic party, we have the new progressive members who do not allow republicans to bully them, so lets hope that the rest of the Democratic party follows through to make sure these thugs are made accountable. It is wrong to throw the white flag out even before the fight begins.

(26,899 posts)Marla is a lot of things, but stupid is not one of them. I think she protected her daughter on many levels, including one that will go unmentioned specifically, but I have always thought that the father reminds me of the Noah Cross character in the film Chinatown. Of course, John Huston was a whole different kettle of fish But there is no question in my mind that the father is a dangerous person in many respects and Marla knew enough about what went on with Ivanka to shield Tiffany best she could.

From Rep Lofgren's review and on 1/6, Rep. Bob Good (R-Virginia) perpetuated Trump's big lie and tweeted;

First,
I'm 110% certain that Bob Good does not represent Virginia's 5th People of Color, LGBTQs, and White Liberals. Bob Good is on the extreme side of Former Rep. Denver Riggleman (R) and a true Trump sycophant.
Second,
When a member of the Fascist Party (the former GOP) says, "ensure the integrity of the election," that's a dog whistle for promoting Voter Suppression. Fortunately, the state of Virginia is Blue.

(8,202 posts)They knew what they were doing. It was a specific choice made deliberately and with intention to accomplish the overthrow of elected government.
That is why they were so confident on Jan. 6th when they continued to vote and argue against accepting the will of the people after the attack. They knew an event like that was going to occur and they expected to be able to overturn the vote in response to it. The very purpose of the mob was to give them cover to overturn. It was the 2021 edition of the Brook Brothers Riot and the Reichstag Fire, updated to include "Only The Best People".
It is also what animates their resistance to any success by the new President and Congress. This is not a political strategy based on any constructive intention. If our members in the House and Senate were not pushing them, they would do nothing in response to the COVID pandemic and its effects because their desire is to break government for and by the people. To help anyone in any kind of need at all would be to acknowledge that GOP members owe their allegiance, and their privileges, to voters, citizens and the Nation, rather than GOP dogma, patrons and sponsors.
They are incapable of doing anything constructive because that quality of decision making was rooted out of the party long ago under Gingrich and his successors. In place of wise and informed citizens they have been recruiting zealots to the cause of GOP hegemony. In place of loyalty to the Nation they have absolute obedience to GOP leaders and party dogma. Listen to them speak at any time or place and you'll hear them repeat it over and over, in all weathers and conditions, in response to every single issue.
As I said elsewhere the GOP defines toxic waste.
