Rand Paul, on This Week (ABC), claimed that Wisconsin absentee ballots lacked addresses, and that correcting them countered prior practice and was illegal.
None of that is true.
Down pointing backhand index
Now he's criticizing Dems for "fighting the last election."

Fact check: Wisconsin clerks followed guidance in place since 2016 about witnesses and absentee ballots

The claim: Wisconsin Election Commission might have violated state law by allowing clerks to fix ballots, report says
Wisconsins election is under a microscope as President Donald Trump cries fraud about the Nov. 3 presidential election that Democratic nominee Joe Biden is projected to win.
The president and his supporters have said, without evidence, that rampant voter fraud allowed his opponent to claim victory after he started election night ahead. Biden took the lead in Wisconsin and other key battleground states after clerks counted mail-in ballots largely cast by Democrats, according to unofficial results a trend observers predicted heading into the election.
Now, a new claim is making the rounds on social media.
A Nov. 8 headline in the Daily Wire initially reported, "Wisconsin Election Commission Might Have Violated State Law By Allowing Clerks To Fix Ballots, Report Says.".
It relies in part on a WISN radio story out of Milwaukee that makes a similar claim. The claim was also widely circulated by conservative websites.
On Nov. 12, the Daily Wire updated its headline and story to reflect the findings of this fact-check.
Wisconsin Republicans have latched onto the issue in their longshot effort to overturn the state's presidential results four years after members of their own party pushed to allow clerks to fill in missing witness information.
Fact check:Wisconsin county did not have a glitch that stole votes from Trump
Heres what we know about it...........................
Our rating: Missing context
We rate this claim as missing context because it omits key facts that would give readers a different understanding of the issue, and may be misleading without that additional context. The Daily Wire and WISN stories don't explain this policy has been in place since 2016 without objection, or that it was brought forth by Republicans and unanimously passed by a nonpartisan commission.

(6,448 posts)I can't speak of all absentee ballots in WI, but my wife and I had very complete documentation.
Paul needs to tell Rudy and the other court jesters that they picked the wrong counties to recount. There are 62 sympathetic deep red counties that would have easily purged their Biden ballots--rather than go after the bluest ones to disenfranchise our Black neighbors and friends.
Just like with everything else we've experienced the past 4 years, they had no strategy.
Great leaders are proactive and organized. They're also legitimate stable geniuses, not self-proclaimed posers.

(8,655 posts)In my deep red county, the local Dems are working hard to get people working the polls on election day to make sure no shenanigans can take place and everything is conducted fairly.

(8,655 posts)My rural county party doesn't have enough membership to staff every municipality 50/50. Municipalities are only required to fill positions at a 50/50 balance (if the parties don't supply workers) if they are over a certain population level. Otherwise, these small rural communities and townships can hire whomever they want - often family and friends of the town/village board members or employees - to work the polls. I would be satisfied having one Dem party-affiliated poll worker to keep everyone honest.
Also, if there's an odd number of workers, the odd one goes to the party that won the last statewide election. So it's not always 50/50 but 50/50+1.
None of this means I think there are voting irregularities everywhere. But that's the environment they can occur in. I've been involved in observing/participating in recounts for 20 years. Mostly what I've seen is just incompetence in completing the duties or problems with technology (because the typically older poll workers don't understand it or don't get solid training.)
The other thing to keep in mind is that in WI, you can always observe. There are legal requirements to accommodate observers in every polling station in the state. If you can't work a whole day, you can always show up during the day to see how they are conducting balloting. And you can stay at the end of the day and observe how they close the polls. We have sent campaign workers to various municipalities to do just that some years.

(6,448 posts)In my part of WI, we get a lot of GOP candidates running unopposed, so I won't count on the poll workers being balanced.
One unopposed incumbent Assemblyman had over $50,000 in his war chest. About half of that was from out of state. No surprise.

The USPS was paid lost of extra postage too, because the envelope was so big and weighed more than a regular letter.
But they all had addresses, or they'd all still be sitting in the clerk's offices.
How can Rand be so ignorant of the obvious? He's an eye doctor..obvious isn't part of his career.
And I am a poll worker. Have been for over a decade. Considered a Chief Elections Inspector.
My suggestion, after the 2008 election, is now part of election administrative code in Wisc.
I will work on the two elections, this Spring in Wisconsin.
Spring Primary on Feb 16 and;
Spring General on April 6
