Went to my grocery store on Friday 7/3 and the store was busy at 9am.
I had my mask on. Anyway, there was a couple, in their 40's looking a bit shabbily dressed, he unshaven and she in pajamas.
I was getting my milk, when she came up behind me, brushed my shoulder as she grabbed a gallon.
Alarmed by the shoulder brush, I yelled. "Please keep your distance" I said. and quickly stepped away from her.
She said, "Fuck You."
So did I, immediately and very, very loudly ( knowing this would draw attention).
"No! Fuck You. Get Away From Me Right Now!
"I am getting milk and you can wait before you get yours. There are signs all over the store asking you to keep 6 ft away."
Her scruffy husband then piped up saying, "We don't believe fake news. We don't care." (the words fake news, explained everything).
I could see a store clerk running over.
I said to the man "I don't care what you want to believe. I don't want to catch any diseases you may carry." I said.
He had a blankish stare. I don't think he understood what I'd said.
The clerk heard me, and interrupted us, asking what the problem was.
She piped up, " I just got my milk."
I replied, "You nearly shoved me aside to get your milk, when you saw I was already getting some. Could you wait a few seconds? ...to keep a distance."
Husband piped up, 'We know our rights and we don't believe the virus." (not sure if the virus speaks to them directly or how often.)
The clerk stopped him and said, "This is private property and we can refuse service to anyone. The store is well posted with social distancing, all over the store, and we expect our customers to be considerate of others."
The husband, then said a terse "Fuck You" to the clerk. The woman, in a true Trumpie tantrum, threw her half-gallon of milk on the floor which broke open and sprayed a couple of other customers, who started yelling at her.
"You are leaving the store now." the clerk told her and her husband.
A 2nd clerk showed up by then, and reached for their cart, pulling it toward him. They didn't try to stop him and he got the cart away, I assume, in case the woman would want to throw that too.
"We have rights!" the woman yelled. She threatened to call the police. and this is why I am writing this, because what the clerk told them, shut them down so fast and completely..
"This store is not a public place. This private property, just like your home and we can refuse service to anyone. Today, you two are being refused and must leave immediately. Throwing milk at customers is assault and you can be arrested. Please leave now, before we call the police... and the milk is going to cost you $2.39."
The two clerks escorted the couple away and I went to self-checkout. The couple were at the front desk, paying for the milk and talking to the manager with the two clerks.
They left the store. Who knows where else they went to enact their "Trumpie Tantrum Shopping Spree".
I am glad to see my grocer, stand up for customers and hope others will start speaking up to stop these mass spreaders.
PS: I just finished chemo and look like it. Gaunt, pale...covered from head to toe with skull cap, eye protection from my glasses, a N95 mask covered with a cloth one, long sleeves & pants and gloves. It's 90F outside.
No moron is going get between me and my brand of milk.

I turned back and gave him a big smile.

Saw the same thing on 4th of July. Despite all the warnings not to be setting off fireworks in town, a whole group of zombies descended on my neighborhood to defy the laws, and the rights of people who live here.
I'm glad to see the pushback.

Allowed to metastasize all over the country from the poison excreted by limbaugh at one station - that suddenly got great ratings (so the resulting conclusion from management and friends in national programming - CLONE THAT! Spread it EVERYWHERE! Either by piping his show in over some network servicing all the small markets in America or replicating him with some cheaper local sound-alike/rant-alike). Easy ratings, and VERY easy money.
And the "great unwashed" folks who finally found THEIR views showcased by the big fat loudmouth on the radio suddenly felt justified. THEY were the mainstream. THEY were the coveted demographic. THEIRS was the "opinion of record."
WRONG!!! They were just the loudest. And they LOVED-LOVED-LOVED having that reprehensible, un-American, resentful, grievance-nursing, hate-everybody-who-doesn't-look-like-me mindset "legitimized" - given validation, a voice, and a seat at the table. When it should have been kept in the back corner of the basement closet in a taped-up file box, where it belonged.

(16,635 posts)Not just one meme environment like fox but a targeted meme environment specific to the person. Like gardening and distrust vaccines? Here are these topics in a neat little package sprinkled with conspiracy theories about Bill gates and the liberal plot to mask you.
The poison that Limbaugh excreted has gotten more refined.

(24,389 posts)are website discussions on the right where people encourage each other to "take a stand" in public places.
My prescriptions are at CVS. They have plexiglass and masks for their cashiers, 6' distancing marks on the floor, and signs about wearing masks. But their official policy is not to challenge anyone without a mask or who does not keep distance in the checkout line. I am checking out the policies of other pharmacies and will switch if I find one that backs up precautions.

(25,439 posts)I am sorely tempted to tell people in stores who have their masks under their noses that they work better when used as intended, but I am too chicken.
wnylib
(24,389 posts)is the reason why CVS does not enforce their precautions, according to what a couple of clerks told me.
At another store in the same plaza I saw a guy walking around with his mask around his neck. So when he passed me, I said, "Wow. i thought the masks were for the face." He said with a smirk, "It is on my face." So I said he must be 2 faced because I could clearly see one that was not covered. Smirk disappeared.
Yeah, it was foolish and risky for me to speak up, but I'm tired of jerks spreading illness without giving a damn. So on that day it just slipped out.

I also wore my mask today in 2 stores where no one wears masks. I don't give them a chance to say anything, I tell them I paid good money for this mask and I'm wearing it, I'm not afraid.

(36,204 posts)My hunch is that you are female, because while assholes can be nondiscriminatory assholes, there is a lot of evidence on microaggressions showing that both some men and some women view women as lower status so they can behave badly toward them when they would not do so against men. They then react even worse when a woman surprises them by behaving assertively.
I dont want to ask you to give up info that you dont want to share but I am curious as to whether this happened here.

(432 posts)I was in a department store, and the checkout line was a mile long, but with 6 feet social distancing.
Man and a woman couple get directly behind me...no masks...no 6 foot social distancing. I asked him to please back away to the 6ft. marker. He defiantly says they dont have have to.
That set me off. I raised my voice in anger, and said, GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME! So they step back, he laughs and calls me a pussy. Now it devolves into a shouting match. I called him a FART OUT OF TRUMPS ASS. I left the line with the parting shot...I HOPE YOU GET CORONAVIRUS AND DIE, YOU PIECE OF SHIT.
As I was walking away, he called me a fucking asshole, which is the highest compliment I want from any Trump supporter.
I really feel for you. These people have been brainwashed. Going to the store should not be this stressful, or pose a needless risk to our health.
We take our revenge on 11/3.

(16 posts)Hi all,
A lurker from the great White North here! As I read story after story of your encounters with the terminally contemptible, I am in awe of your courage, resilience and humour. I'm choosing this thread, because SmartVoter22's story is emblematic of the crap I know you have to put up with (for some on a daily basis). Up here in Ontario, we elected a right-wing Premier (think Governor) who, against all odds, stepped up to listen to the health experts and govern with compassion and good sense during the pandemic. Not everyone wears a mask in public, but it will soon (this week or next) be mandatory in my city and many others for the forseeable future. That being said, it is hard for me to imagine someone here objecting to reminders to maintain distance, or worse, to mock mask-wearers.
When I read your stories and see the videos of the (in the words of our Premier) "Yahoos", broadcasting their ignorance, hopeless supidity and soulless sociopathic disregard for their neighbours, it causes me to wonder whether I could handle them with the strength, grace and composure that you demonstrate.
I salute you all!
SmartVoter22, I wish you all the best in your recovery! I'd say your backbone is a good indicator that you've got it beat!

(13,708 posts)At my beloved farmers market.
I heard hollering on the sidewalk and went over to see what was happening.
Two police cars had a young man kettled on the sidewalk and the officers were out of their cars. The kid was not white-skinned, so I walked near to stand and bear witness to the event. An officer told me to step away, so I did, to the corner with my phone in hand, in case this needed recording. The officer noticed that.
The kid became quite agitated, but he knew his rights. Kept telling them NOT TO TOUCH him. They ran his ID. And one cop eventually became frustrated and sped off. Eventually the other cop left, too, after fifteen minutes or so.
The only other person watching this was a rangy tall white-haired dude, who I mistakenly thought to be a hippy type.
I spoke to the kid. Cliff. Asked him what had happened. He said he had commented loudly to several people at the farmers market who were not wearing masks. Asked them if they thought they were immune. The market manager called the police on him.
He left, and this rangy dude stepped up to me. A good eighteen inches taller. He leaned in (not wearing a mask) and said "You are protecting an idiot." Me: "Who is the idiot?" He indicated the kid. I said 'He's a citizen expressing himself on public property, as is his right."
Him, very menacingly: "You'd better be very careful who you criticize."
I drew myself up to my full height and this came out of my mouth, unbidden: "WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT???"
I am a soft-spoken woman, usually. But I think I scared him. I LOVE my farmers market, but I was not happy about the manager calling police for a kid mouthing off.
