Acting Milwaukee County Sheriff Richard Schmidt likes to tout his education credentials in his bid to win a full term.

Schmidt will tell crowds that he has bachelor's and master's degrees and recently was awarded a doctorate. And he has even begun work on yet another doctorate.

"Dr. Richard Schmidt," proclaim his yard signs for the Aug. 14 Democratic primary. "Milwaukee County sheriff."

But his is not your traditional academic record.

Schmidt got his first two degrees from an unaccredited, Christian fundamentalist college, with a checkered recent history, in which men earn degrees in Bible and theology while programs "specifically for ladies" include "marriage and motherhood" and "missionary wife."

So, literally, it's a college where women can get an MRS degree.

Then Schmidt — who replaced controversial Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. when he abruptly resigned last year — in recent years got his doctorate from a tiny Baptist college in Marinette County where he once served as an unpaid consultant before it shut down in 2015. He is pursuing a second doctorate from yet another unaccredited religious school based in Louisiana....................................

5. We have a great candidate, Earnell Lucas

He graduated from Marquette University (that's more than Scott Walker can say) and also took training from the FBI and two other well thought of institutions that I can't remember right now. He was a Milwaukee police officer for 25 years, finishing as a captain, and then in charge of security for Major League Baseball for many years. Any DUers who live in Milwaukee County, please be sure to vote for Earnell Lucas. (P.S.: He's African American, which I think is a plus.)

8. More on the sheriff election

County executive Chris Abele has just spent $300,000 on behalf of Schmidt's campaign, according to the Journal-Sentinel. The TV ads are starting to run, praising Schmidt all over the place. The newspaper story quotes a deputy sheriff who is also running in this race (with very little in the way of a campaign):

Ostrowski objected strongly to Abele's efforts to sway the voters in favor of Schmidt, calling the county exec's spending "disgusting" and "wrong." "He's trying to manipulate the system," said Ostrowski, who is thought to be running third.

Ostrowski added that Schmidt essentially ran the Sheriff's Office under Clarke, who spent a lot of time on the road and on conservative TV. The deputy said you can't separate Schmidt and the previous sheriff, as Abele is trying to do.

Perhaps, Ostrowski said, Abele is hoping to get a yes-man in the Sheriff's Office. "That's what's concerning," he added.

People died in the jail during the time Clarke and Schmidt were in charge. Don't let Abele buy Schmidt's way into this office.
