from the excerpt:

The chief justice of Wisconsin’s Supreme Court, Edward Ryan, also made a deep impression. In 1873, La Follette, then eighteen, heard Ryan give a commencement speech to the graduating class of the University of Wisconsin Law School. “There is looming up a new and dark power,” Ryan told them. “The accumulation of individual wealth seems to be greater than it ever has been since the downfall of the Roman Empire. The enterprises of the country are aggregating vast corporate combinations of unexampled capital, boldly marching, not for economic conquests only, but for political power.” His talk issued a chilling warning that marked La Follette forever.

“The question will arise and arise in your day, though perhaps not fully in mine,” Ryan said. “Which shall rule—wealth or man; which shall lead—money or intellect; who shall fill public stations—educated and patriotic freemen, or the feudal serfs of corporate capital?”

In LaFollette's time and, because we were not dilligent, once again in our time...the spectre of Corporate rule hangs heavy above us.

is this fascist insanity that's spreading through the whole country.

The perpetrators do not get two things:

1. That we are Not like them, and never will be

2. And that they do not own us and we cannot be forced into subjugation.

But they'll probably die trying anyway.

Unfortunately we have to think and act like the Rethuglicans if we want to win elections. I am at a loss at how to do this.

Corporations are People...see Santa Clara County vs Southern Pacific Railroad.

really, really stretching it ...opinion written in by CLERK, not the judge..issue of personhood NEVER ARGUED AND NO PRECEDENT EVER STATED.

Money is Free Speech....see Buckley vs Velejo

how could any American...much less a Supreme Court Justice...come up with such foolishness?

Tommy Thompson had a role in the change with the workfare issue, demonizing people receiving assistance.

It's still a very masculinist culture. We don't know yet how to transition to a more modern, inclusive politics. Much of the rural population is dismissive of the SE urban population, and vice versa.

An intentional, motivating statewide message is still needed.

The changes toward conservative rule were in motion before Walker. We will be more effective in the upcoming election.
