Local and state leaders and child welfare advocates held a press conference at the state Capitol on Wednesday denouncing the Trump administration's policy of separating of immigrant children from their parents.
Speakers, including state Rep. JoCasta Zamarripa, D-Milwaukee, and state Rep. Chris Taylor, D-Madison, broadly condemned the continued separation of families and Gov. Scott Walker's failure to rebuke the president.
On Monday, Walker announced he would go forward with sending National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border. Other governors, including Republican Gov. Larry Hogan of Maryland, have announced they are withdrawing their National Guard support over the family separation policy.

Taylor said she believes most immigrant parents do not come to the U.S. seeking a better life, but out of a need for survival. She said the practice of separating children had seriously shaken her and that she was in disbelief at the level of callousness shown by the current presidential administration.
What we are seeing has really shaken us," Taylor said. "I never would have thought I would see a president put children in cages."

Pediatrician Dr. Dipesh Navsaria said that while some adversity may benefit a childs development, more severe trauma such as separation can be devastating for children, particularly in the long-term.
Young brains are different, so if youre always feeling fear
your brain wires for survival, Navsaria said. The problem is, you cant undo that easily.
