Madison City Council to consider ban on smoking around all city-owned buildings

A proposal would ban smoking around all buildings owned by the city of Madison.

The plan, which will be introduced at the City Council meeting Tuesday, would prohibit smoking within 25 feet of entrances, windows that can be opened and air intakes for all city-owned building.

It would expand upon an ordinance that specifically bans smoking within 25 feet of the Central Library as well as on the front entrance/staircase area to the City-County Building on the side facing Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Currently, city law requires municipal buildings have at least one smoke-free entrance and allows only one entrance to be a designated smoking area.
