West Virginia governor awards $1M grant for former coal miners

LOGAN, W.Va. (AP) – Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has awarded a $1 million grant to provide environmental jobs to workers affected by layoffs in three West Virginia coal counties.

Tomblin announced the grant to the Human Resource Development Foundation at the Ralph R. Willis Career and Technical Center in Logan on Friday.

The grant will help the foundation put Boone, Logan and Mingo county residents to work clearing trash and debris from the Guyandotte River and several tributaries.

State Department of Environmental Protection officials said the project will let workers continue working and living in southern West Virginia.
