BERKELEY COUNTY, W.Va. -- Investigators with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office said a man is dead after being struck by a CSX train in Martinsburg Tuesday evening. ... Police said this happened off of Clematis Court near Rock Cliff Drive around 6:30 p.m.
9-1-1 dispatchers told investigators that members from the CSX train crew called and said a man who was walking on the tracks was struck. ... "The horn sounded well before," said Brooke Clyde, who witnessed the incident. "There's a corner up here, and as soon as the train turned the corner he started sounding his whistle."
A medical examiner was called to the scene and determined the man was in his mid-twenties. ... Officials said the investigation is underway and nothing is being ruled out in terms of the cause of death. ... "You never want to see anything like that. You don't want to see someone lose their life. It was really sad," said Clyde.
Neighbors say that people walk on the train tracks in that location all the time. They say sometimes they're wearing headphones and not paying attention. Neighbors hope this recent incident will show just how dangerous walking on the tracks can be.
