Procter & Gamble to build $500 million plant in Berkeley County

Procter & Gamble Co., maker of popular brands like Tide, Downy, Pampers and Charmin, announced Tuesday it plans to build a $500 million manufacturing plant in Berkeley County.

The 1 million square foot plant, which is expected to open in 2017, will be the company’s first plant in West Virginia and just the second new U.S. facility the company has built since 1971. Procter & Gamble currently operates 29 plants in 21 states.

The company said the Eastern Panhandle location would be ideally suited to help the company utilize its new distribution center network, which includes facilities in Georgia, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The plant will be built in the Tabler Station Business Park. It is expected to create 1,000 construction jobs and employ 700 full-time permanent workers once it opens in 2017.

MARTINSBURG - The Procter & Gamble Company will build a multi-category manufacturing facility in Berkeley County in the Tabler Station Business Park. ... When the plant opens in 2017, it will be one of the most advanced and sustainable plants among P&G's global manufacturing and supply-chain operations, according to a news release from the company.

The more than one million square-foot facility represents a capital investment of approximately $500 million and will produce multiple P&G brands when it is fully operational. Currently, P&G's U.S. operations include 29 plants in 21 states. This will be P&G's first plant in West Virginia and only its second new site in the U.S. since 1971.

The facility will be located between Interstate 81 and the Winchester & Western railroad tracks in the Tabler Station Business Park, with more than a mile of I-81 frontage. Sources tell The Journal construction is expected to begin in May.

The project is expected to be officially announced at a news conference Tuesday afternoon in Charleston. The Journal will have a reporter at the event and more details will be provided as they become available.
