West Virginia Gov. Justice still looking to eliminate state's personal income tax
CHARLESTON — Shortly after Jim Justice won re-election in November with support from more than 65% of the state’s voters, the governor began expressing his desire to eliminate the state’s personal income tax.
Justice, who become a Republican in 2017 after he was originally elected as a Democrat, has promised to keep backing the issue in the months ahead after lawmakers in the Republican-controlled West Virginia Legislature failed to pass a tax reform package during this year’s regular session.
The governor has framed the issue as an economic development strategy aimed at spurring growth, increasing investment and addressing West Virginia’s continued population loss.
Just before members of the House of Delegates voted down the last viable tax bill of the session, Justice said he planned to “go on the road” in support of his tax plan, similar to the series of virtual and in-person town hall events he hosted earlier this year.
