WinCo appeals decision on plans for first Seattle store

Weeks after WinCo Foods learned it must complete an environmental review for its proposed store at 13550 Aurora Ave. N. in Seattle, the discount grocery chain is making its next move.

WinCo has appealed the hearing examiner's decision to King County Superior Court, a move signaling the company's continued interest in the long-vacant site.

The store would be WinCo's first in Seattle. The Boise, Idaho-based grocery chain first filed plans to redevelop the property in 2024 and had been working its way through the permitting process before hitting opposition.

The opposition comes from Lake Washington Working Families, a coalition of area residents, activists and organizers that says it supports "sustainable growth and good jobs in King County, while limiting impacts to climate change and our natural environment."
