Groundbreaking kicks off $130 million housing project at JBLM
Joint Base Lewis-McChord is set to get more than 200 new homes over the next two years in an effort to ease the base's housing crunch.
The rental housing is being developed by Liberty Military Housing, which held a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for its planned 212-home development at the base's Meriwether Landing neighborhood.
The $130 million project will have duplex-style homes with four bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms per unit, as well as fenced yards, covered patios and two-car garages. The development will also include new roadways and two parks with playgrounds.
The first homes will be complete in 2026, and the entire project is expected to wrap up by 2027.
Funding comes through the federal Military Housing Privatization Initiative, which allows private companies that specialize in military housing development and management to work with armed services to obtain private-sector funding.
