Sodo rezoning measure that divided business groups passes

The Seattle City Council passed a controversial measure Tuesday that would allow for more housing in Seattle's Sodo neighborhood, rebuking the efforts to preserve the industrial lands around the Port of Seattle.

Proposed by Council President Sara Nelson, the measure will rezone a small area around the stadiums, named the Stadium Transition Overlay District, for up to 990 units of additional housing, half of which will be affordable.

“Today, the Council took decisive action to address Seattle’s housing affordability crisis and support local entrepreneurs,” Nelson said in a release after the vote.

The bill passed, 6-3, with council members Nelson, Joy Hollingsworth, Maritza Rivera, Mark Solomon, Rob Saka and Cathy Moore voting in favor. Dan Strauss, Alexis-Mercedes Rinck and Bob Kettle opposed the measure, which will go into effect June 30.
