76% undecided in race for Washington State Supreme Court, Position #2; Dave Larson has four point lead over Sal Mungia

More than three-fourths of voters in Washington haven’t yet decided who they are going to support to fill an open position for a six-year term on the state’s highest court, the Northwest Progressive Institute’s latest electoral survey has found.

76% of 571 likely voters surveyed last week by Public Policy Polling for the Northwest Progressive Institute said they weren’t sure how they were voting. 14% said they would be voting for Dave Larson, a Federal Way municipal court judge backed by the Republican Party. 10% said they would be voting for Sal Mungia, an attorney backed by the Democratic Party and eight of the nine sitting justices.

The high number of not sure voters is typical for a nonpartisan race in Washington — it’s very much in line what we have seen in the past in our statewide and local polling.

For example, in May of 2018, we found conspiracy theorist Nathan Choi ahead of incumbent Justice Steve Gonzalez by six points. 74% said they were not sure who they would be voting for. That research prompted the mass media to take another look at the race and profile the candidates. KIRO memorably aired a story showing reporter Essex Porter trying to chase down Choi after his demand to be interviewed “live” was not granted. (KIRO had never agreed to a live interview.)

One thing I like about mail in voting is I can research candidates of lower ballot positions.
