Proposal seeks to restart micro-apartment developments in Seattle

There's a move afoot at Seattle City Hall to reverse a 10-year-old ordinance that has severely limited the development of micro-apartments.

A 2024 state law requires cities to allow micro-units in any urban growth area by the end of 2025, though Seattle legislators are moving at a faster clip.

Micro-apartments, also called co-living or congregate housing, have lockable sleeping rooms that are independently rented. Often the room will have a bathroom but no kitchen, so residents sometimes share a communal one.

The rooms may be as small as is allowable for a habitable living space under the building code — down to 70 square feet — and rent for as little as $850 a month.
