Hilary Franz, Tiffany Smiley, Leslie Lewallen among the congressional candidates doing poorly in 2024 Top Two election
Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D‑Washington, an upset winner in 2022, came out with a strong showing in last nights Top Two election as she heads into a rematch with ultra MAGA extremist Republican Joe Kent.
Gluesenkamp Perez was taking 46.87% of the vote in early returns, running eight points ahead of Kent. She had early leads in Cowlitz, Skamania and Wahkiakim counties, all rural areas carried by Kent two years ago. The Republican vote was divided, with Camas City Councilmember Leslie Lewallen garnering 12.43%.
This election is about Southwest Washington coming together to stop Joe Kent and his angry , dangerous, divisive extreme politics. Tonight was the first step and in November we will finish the job, MGP said in a statement.
While turnout has been low, the stakes for Washingtons congressional delegation have been high. Washington boasts four highly competitive races for Congress, with voters tasked with sorting out a pair of finalists in every race and delivering a verdict on the political movement of ex-Oval Office occupant Donald Trump.
