Seattle council committee advances amended office-to-housing bill

The Seattle City Council Land Use Committee on Wednesday advanced an amended version of a proposal that removes barriers to converting commercial buildings to residential uses in certain zones citywide.

The amended bill will be up for a vote of the full council on July 9.

The amendment by Councilmember Cathy Moore removes an exemption for conversion projects in downtown high-rise or mid-rise multifamily zones from Mandatory Housing Affordability (MHA) requirements.

Under the MHA program, developers can build larger, taller projects if they either include a small percentage of affordable apartments or pay into an affordable housing development fund.
