* and that these rides are essentially lightweight "tinker toys" or "Gilbert Erector Sets"... means that safety is compromised!

They're disassembled and reassembled over and over, and it's little surprise that mistakes are happen with reassembly. Over time, important pieces will be lost. Hasty workers will miss tightening a vital bolt. Duct tape and zip ties will be used as temporary measures to hold rigged parts in place.
