'This breaks my heart': Over half of Everett Herald news staff laid off

EVERETT — The new owners of The Daily Herald gutted over half of the newsroom staff Wednesday, including the newspaper’s two top editors.

Carpenter Media Group, an Alabama-based company, handed out layoff notices to 10 reporters, photographers and designers, who are all members of the Everett NewsGuild.

The close-knit staff shed tears and shared hugs as they learned their impending fate.

Company executives cited Carpenter’s “operating principles” to justify the layoffs, but have otherwise offered little detail, the Everett NewsGuild said in a statement.

Alabama based, I hope that doesn't mean they want it to be a Murdoch type rag.

I’d be looking elsewhere. This will accelerate at a fast clip the next decade.
