Mayor proposes streamlining commercial-to-housing projects across Seattle

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell on Thursday announced legislation that would reduce regulatory barriers to converting existing buildings from commercial to residential uses.

The proposal is not just for central business district office buildings, as in Harrell's Downtown Activation Plan, but for all parts of the city where office and retail spaces commonly exist.

"These changes are a critical step in moving the idea of office conversion to a reality," Harrell said in a press release.

The legislation builds on the recent passage of the state's sales tax exemption on projects converting nonresidential spaces into housing.
