New census data shows population growth in Puget Sound region

The Puget Sound region grew last year as King County surpassed Queens County, New York, to cement its spot as the 13th-largest county in the U.S.

New population estimates the U.S. Census Bureau released Thursday show the area comprising King, Kitsap, Pierce and Snohomish counties added 12,440 new residents between July 2022 and July 2023. The population of King County rose by 0.3% to 2.27 million.

Overall, the region's population is now up by 18,868 people, or 0.4%, since 2020, and now sits at 4.4 million.

King County's population rebounded in 2022 after falling in 2021 for the first time in nearly six decades. However, the county is still 2,902 people short of its 2020 population.
