With newfound snow, Stevens Pass, Mt. Baker to open this week

STEVENS PASS — Packed with 3 feet of snow, the slopes at Stevens Pass will open Tuesday for the season.

Staff had planned to start the season Dec. 1, but had to delay due to little snow in the stretch of the Cascades near Skykomish. The resort only had 8 inches of snow earlier this month.

Stevens Pass, owned by Vail Resorts, aims to open three lifts on Tuesday. Staff can’t open the new lift for this season — the four-seater Kehr’s Chair — until the hill near the resort entrance has more snow.

Once open, Kehr’s Chair will transport double the number of people uphill, compared to the lift it replaced.
