WA agency acquires shuttered behavioral health hospital in Tukwila
Washington's Department of Social and Health Services has acquired the former Cascade Behavioral Health Hospital in Tukwila, Gov. Jay Inslee's office announced Wednesday.
The 118-bed behavioral health facility closed in July citing "Covid and other complexities" that made operating unsustainable. The state purchased the building for $29.9 million, in an effort to boost its supply of beds and relieve stress at other state facilities.
"The closure of this hospital was tough news, but it also presented us with a sudden and unexpected opportunity, Inslee said in a news release. We have been working diligently to serve rapidly growing numbers of patients needing behavioral health care, but one of our biggest constraints is the amount of time it takes to build and staff new facilities."
The state takes possession of the building Tuesday, with plans to bring civilly committed patients from state hospitals there in the near future, following upgrades and renovations.
