Sound Transit eyes late summer start for $283M Hilltop light rail extension

Sound Transit’s $283 million Tacoma Link light rail expansion is set to open at the end of August after months of delay.

The 2.4-mile extension was originally slated to be complete in 2022 and was then pushed back to early 2023. It saw additional delays due to supply chain problems and the rising cost of construction.

Over the next week, the transit authority will be running trains for stress testing to identify issues prior to passenger use.

Construction on the light rail extension began in 2018, but discussions about the extension date back to 2013 when Sound Transit presented Tacoma City Council with its original proposal. Funding for construction was provided by Sound Transit, a Federal Small Starts grant, the city of Tacoma and additional grants.
