City Hall Park in Seattle reopens to the public

City Hall Park in Seattle's Pioneer Square neighborhood was again open to the public Tuesday after a nearly two-year shutdown due to safety issues.

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, who forecasted the park's reopening in his Downtown Activation Plan, kicked off a day full of festivities that included food trucks, a band, lawn games and buskers.

"Today’s re-opening celebration reflects the energy and vitality we are excited to bring back to City Hall Park, not just for this summer, but throughout the year," Harrell said in a news release.

The area had been plagued by property damage, illicit activity and crimes that disrupted operations at the nearby King County Courthouse, and the park was finally shut down in August 2021 after a fatal stabbing. The city has spent $2 million so far to renovate the 1.3-acre park and plans to spend an additional $300,000 through 2024 to rejuvenate the park.
